Album

Polyphony was formed by Stephen Layton in 1986 for a concert in Kings College Chapel, Cambridge. Since then the choir has performed and recorded regularly to great critical acclaim throughout the world. In a new poll by Gramophone Magazine they were named as one of the worlds leading choirs Stephen Layton's choir have become renowned for both their sound and versatility whether in early music, or contemporary works such as those of Eric Whitacre, they embody the remarkable tradition of British choral excellence at its finest. Listeners looking for examples of Arvo Pärt's tonal, tintinnabular style will find that most of the works on this 2003 CD meet their needs. Composed between 1996 and 2002, these eight pieces are triadically based, shaded with modal inflections, and free of the tight dissonances and chromatic touches that adorned much of Pärt's music in the 1980s. Stephen Layton and Polyphony seem to have found an ideal balance of intensity and dignified elegance, of sensuousness and purity. The recordings, too, could hardly be better. This disc deserves the widest possible success' BBC Music Magazine. Arvo Pärt's new disc of choral music conveys a quiet and cumulative power, given performances of luminous purity by Polyphony and Stephen Layton. Only the most pure and precise of choral groups can raise Arvo Pärt's work to its optimum level of expression.
