Album

The BBC Philharmonic sounds great in its new MediaCity concert space, and conductor Andrew Davis has the music in his bones. He leads the orchestra's strings crisply through what Elgar called the devil of a fugue in the Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra, Op. The Elegy for strings, Op. 58, is chastely beautiful, and the five Pomp and Circumstance marches, Op. 39, are neither overbearing nor lifeless. The Elgar Cello Concerto, Op. 85, has long been one of my favorite cello pieces. So while I am always pleased to hear it performed, I must confess to a sense of trepidation that the piece itself will be butchered. Here I had no cause for worry. Watkins playing is soulful and evocative, and the BBC Philharmonic, under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis, definitely does justice to the music. Paul Watkins and Sir Andrew Davies give a reading that combines tenderness with a real Elgarian sense of 'getting on with it'. Listen to Elgar's own recordings on a bargain EMI set which set the standard for all those who followed. 85: II. Lento - Allegro molto. Paul Watkins, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra & Sir Andrew Davis. Paul WatkinsBBC POAndrew Davis CHANDOS. Andrew Clements. Thu 5 Apr 2012 BST First published on Thu 5 Apr 2012 BST. By agreeing to become a member of the Emerson Quartet next year, cellist Paul Watkins has committed himself to chamber music for the indefinite future. Paul Watkins is nothing if not energetic. He already combines an international career as a solo cellist with a busy schedule of conducting and membership of the Nash Ensemble. Shortly he is to join the renowned Emerson Quartet and, if I recall correctly a recent interview he gave on BBC Radio 3, he will accommodate that new appointment by leaving, with regret, the Nash Ensemble. 58 by Sir Edward Elgar Conductor: Sir Andrew Davis OrchestraEnsemble: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Period: Romantic Written: 1909 England. Pomp and Circumstance Marches 5, Op. Solo: Paul Watkins cello. Elgar started writing his Pomp and Circumstance Marches in 1901 in the wake of his national successes with the Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius. The Marches vary considerably in mood. The Cello Concerto in E minor, written in 1918 19, was the last major work Elgar completed. Its mood is often described as autumnal, and highly reflective of the ageing composers own state of mind. At the time of writing it, Elgar was concerned about the failing health of his wife and about his own waning popularity he was deeply disturbed, too, by the horrors of the First World War. 58 Sir Edward Elgar BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Sir Andrew Davis. 39, Pomp and Circumstance. Paul Watkins is the cello soloist on a recording that includes some of Elgars most popular music, incomparably performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis. A violinist himself, Elgar wrote for the strings of the orchestra with a special understanding and flair, particularly in a handful of compositions for strings alone. The showpiece among these is the Introduction and Allegro, featured on this programme alongside the iconic titular cello concerto, Elgar's last major work. Cello Concerto.
