We're Taking Over the World. Conn & the Glass Gypsies' theatrical mix of glam, hard rock, pop, disco, and virtually anything else that tickles their fancy works surprisingly well as a vehicle for their anger the pomposity of the title track alone captures the arrogance of the Ugly American quite well. That also goes for the glammy epic We're Taking Over the World and off-kilter mod rock of We Come in Peace, which neatly sums up the hypocrisy the group sees in the war on Iraq: We brought our guns to set you free. The Homeland is an album by Chicago-based rocker Bobby Conn and his backing band, the Glass Gypsies released on January 20, 2004 on Thrill Jockey records. It is noteworthy for taking a more openly political approach than any of Conn's previous albums, being particularly critical of George Bush and the Iraq War. Musically the album focuses mostly on a number of 70s styles, from early-decade prog pseudo-symphonies to late decade disco-rock fusion and funk. The album was recorded at Soma Studios, Chicago. Friday 16 January 2004 01:00. With its outré blend of glam rock and soul, Bobby Conn's 2002 debut The Golden Age stuck out like a sore thumb among the earnest noodlers who make up most of the roster of Chicago post-rock label Thrill Jockey. This follow-up is no less idiosyncratic, a concept album whose mix of taste-free prog rock and political satire recalls Frank Zappa's anti-Establishment broadsides on albums such asBroadway the Hard Way and Meet the Mothers of Prevention. On the basis of The Homeland, his second full-length album for Thrill Jockey, it's hard to imagine making too big of a fuss over Conn, though at the same time it's hard not to admire a performer so content to construct his own alternative cultural universe, entirely independent of the trends currently driving pop music, the Darkness not withstanding. Conn and his Glass Gypsies sound less like either of them than he does another
