Reviews of the Cashless Society - African Raw Material Vol. 1 (1):
I picked this up while on my trip to Botswana and South Africa back in 2005 and it was the best C.D in that genre that I picked up. The production is really cool but overshadows the rappers somewhat (Specifically on tracks like Tizeye and 8-3-1). "Taxi Wars" is my favorite song by far. It sounded like a sped up dub track with crazy wah guitars and one of the best basslines I've heard in years. The rhymes were cool too. As far as the rappers go it doesn't seem like they gelled too well together though. Snaz is cool, X-Amount is cool but Black Intellect and Gemini seemed to be the most convincing. On the production side all is well especially with Gemini on the boards. "Accidental Heroes", the album opener is rugged and raw. "Mad Shit" sounds wierd but somehow works. The Dr. Dre inspired "Tizeye" is the highlight beat but "Taxi Wars" comes a very close second. Its not to say the other producers Snaz and Draztik don't bring which they do(Check the Intro "The Learning" and "Mr. Forgetfull"), its just I liked Gemini's style of production the most. This might vary from person to person coz the beats on this album are really impressive through in through and are very well made. They're the best I've heard from the south African hip-hop albums. Over all I'd give it 3.5 out 5. Mostly coz nof the beats though.
