Next Position Please is the seventh studio album by American rock band Cheap Trick, produced by Todd Rundgren and released in 1983. The title track was originally demoed for the band's 1979 album Dream Police, which had lead singer Robin Zander, lead guitarist Rick Nielsen, and bassist Tom Petersson each singing a verse. The song did not go beyond a demo, but it was referenced in High Priest of Rhythmic Noise, a track from 1980's All Shook Up. Position was eventually re-recorded for this album. Next Position Please. Cheap Trick attempted to ride the new wave on 1982s One on One, but wound up with a wipe-out, so they recovered by hiring Todd Rundgren, one of the few 70s album-rockers who proved that he knew how to negotiate the treacherous waters of the early 80s, for 1983s Next Position Please. Rundgren wielded a heavy hand during his production, pushing Cheap Trick toward making a record that could easily be mistaken for a Utopia record - so much so, the Todd composition, Heavens Falling, slips onto the second side without calling attention to itself. Cheap Trick's 'Next Position Please' came out on Aug. A little over a year after scoring a Top 40 hit with their sixth studio album, 1982's One on One , Cheap Trick returned on Aug. 15, 1983 with the follow-up, Next Position Please. After enjoying multiplatinum success during the '70s with a series of records produced by Tom Werman, the band entered a period of creative flux in the '80s, both in terms of personnel - original bassist Tom Petersson departed in 1980 - and in terms of production. Cheap Trick Format: Audio CD. Next Position Please is an interesting album. As far as songs go there are some great ones on here. However, as far as production goes, it is not so good. Todd Rundgren, who produced the album wanted to get Cheap Trick away from Whoish-bomb-bast, and strip them down to barebones. There are some moments where this works, like on, Won't Take No For an Answer, Invaders of the Heart, and the title track but most of the time it just falls flat on it's face.
