More a sample of the kind of brazilian drum'n bass these people has been producing (ok, except the excellent "Tijuana Frogs" which is deep house), "In rotation" has many of their hits, though as an album it sounds incomplete and patchy. Their sound is fresh and sunny, but not bombasticly danceable, and I don't think that leaving the second part of the album for the vocal tunes is a good idea, because it's there where "In rotation" sounds the strongest. Their "LK" was already a hit, and I think it still is, and the addition of Stamina MC makes it richer. "Sunshine Touch Me" with the drum 'n bass diva Jenna G and the talented M.I.S.T. is classy, though it sounds restrained. Cleveland Watkiss sings another d'n'b hit (he managed to work in the best songs in Makoto's "Human Elements" and Kabuki's "Signal and Noise"), but the other two numbers end abruptly, with little developing, leaving an album of around 50 minutes. Which could be good: maybe the style needed more song-oriented tunes in the 00's, like Un-Cut's "Midnight", but in these tracks they sound like epic compositions heavyly edited. This, with the already mentioned detrimental tracking, leaves a frustrating album that is very good but could be much better.2015 edit: sounding even better than when it was released. The vocal tunes are still the highlight, and still "Dia de sol" ends too soon, but what a sonic pleasure it is.
Tijuana Frogs is great! I can't believe I overlooked that song a decade ago. I'm playing that at least twice a day on my deep house playlist. It's so upbeat and catchy!
