Gris-Gris stylized as GRIS-gris is the debut album by Dr. John Mac Rebennack. Produced by Harold Battiste, it was released on Atco Records in 1968. Despite the New Orleans style, it was recorded in California, albeit with several native New Orleans musicians. Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya. и другие авторские общества 3. Despite the New Orleans style, it was recorded in California with several native New Orleans musicians. Gris-Gris failed to chart in the United Kingdom and the United States. It was re-issued on compact disc decades later and received much greater praise from modern critics, including being listed highly in Rolling Stone magazine's list of list of the 500 gr. Текст песни: Got my sizzling Gris-Gris in my hand Day trippin' up, Back down by you Im the last of the best They call me the Gris-Gris . John's Gris-Gris is among the most enduring recordings of the psychedelic era it sounds as mysterious and spooky in the 21st century as it did in 1968. It is the album where Mac Rebennack established a stage identity that has served him well. Almost everyone played percussion. Gris-Gris sounds like a post-midnight ceremony recorded in the bayou swamp instead of L. s Gold Star Studio where Phil Spector cut hits. The atmosphere is thick, smoky, serpentine, foreboding. Rebennack inhabits his character fully, delivering Creole French and slang English effortlessly in the grain of his half-spoken, half-sung voice. Gris-Gris, by Dr. Towards the end of 1965, after their meteoric rise to the top of the charts with I Got You Babe, Sonny and Cher were invited to perform at a private party in the penthouse apartment of mining tycoon Charles Engelhard Jr. at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. The invitation came after Jackie Kennedy, a guest of the intimate party and on one of her first social outings following the tragic death of her late husband, expressed her wish to see the rising duo perform in the flesh at the event. The city was ripe with night clubs and other joints where a wide variety of music styles old and new where intermixed. Gris gris is the New Orleans term for voodoo, and one could be forgiven for thinking this album was recorded in the dead of night in one of the city s famed graveyards. Well, it was recorded in the dead of night at Los Angeles famed Gold Star Studios, where Phil Spector recorded many of his classics. John the Night Tripper, he of the feathered headdresses and name taken from an 1840s New Orleans root doctor. The result was probably the spookiest and most hypnotic album ever made voodoo psychedelia is about as close as you can come, but doesn t quite capture the otherworldly vibe. The sleevenotes match Gris Gris music for swampy mysticism, bordering on impenetrability to those not versed in Crescent City lore. Dr John. To you whom I may communicate with shortly through the smoke of Deaux-Deaux the rattlesnake whose forked tongue hisses pig Latin in silk and satin da-zaw-ig-day, may the gilded splinters of Auntie Andre spew forth in your path to light and guide your way through the bayous of life. For prime poetic mumbo-jumbo, look no further than the back cover text of Dr Johns debut LP Gris-Gris 1968. Of course the music is beyond stoned magnificence

In terms of dynamics, resolution and colour my copy of this reissue from Speakers Corner sounds dramatically better than my SD 33-23 US. Perfect pressing, very good reprint of the artwork.
Whitegrove
Yes you can, it's an amazing remaster and a great pressing, but I was unlucky to get a copy with a nasty scratch mark on B1, hope it's just this copy and not others as well.

Listened to it three times so far. Packaging is top notch, identical to original with laminated cover and lined inner sleeve. The sound quality is fantastic, the separation of all of the sounds laced throughout literally come to life with a lot of depth unheard before. Kevin Gray nailed this one! Highly Recommended!
