Includes bibliographical references p. 399-405 and Offenbach 20 June 1819 - 5 October 1880, composer and cellist, was one of the originators of the operetta form, a precursor of the modern musical comedy. He was one of the most influential composers of popular music in Europe in the 19th century, and many of his works remain in the repertory. Offenbach was born in Cologne, Germany and was the son of Isaac Juda Eberst, a cantor, bookbinder, music teacher and composer. His father was living at a time when the Napoleonic edict required that Jews had to take inheritable family names. An itinerant violinist, he adopted the name read more. Jacques Offenbach ˈɒfənbɑːx, also US: ˈɔːf-, French: , German: listen 20 June 1819 5 October 1880 was a German-born French composer, cellist and impresario of the Romantic period. He is remembered for his nearly 100 operettas of the 1850s to the 1870s, and his uncompleted opera The Tales of Hoffmann. He was a powerful influence on later composers of the operetta genre, particularly Johann Strauss Jr. and Arthur Sullivan. His best-known works were continually revived. Offenbach's frothy, satirical operettas flourished in mid-19th century France, he argues, because they were both a mirror held up to the glittering but hollow imperial regime and a safe outlet for mockery of it they would never have been born had the itself been operetta-like. An excellent presentation of 19th century Paris and the music of Offenbach. This is my only book on the topic so no comparisons are possible. Read more. The son of a Cologne synagogue cantor, Offenbach and his violinist brother Julius were trained at the Paris Conservatoire. Jacques Offenbach thereafter found employment as a cellist, initially at the Opéra-Comique. He developed a successful early career as a virtuoso on the instrument, for which he wrote a number of works, including a Concerto militaire and a concertino. He was for five years conductor at the Théâtre Français, but in 1855 he rented his own theatre, where his early light-hearted stage works were performed. Jacques Offenbach, who was born in the German city of Cologne on June 20, 1819 and died in Paris in 1880, is regarded as the founder of the modern operetta. A masterful entertainer, he was characterized by typical Rhineland humor and French esprit, as German cabaret artist Konrad Beikircher said at the December kick-off event of the Offenbach bicentennial that will be celebrated throughout 2019. In 1833, his father sent the virtuoso to Paris to further his career under the stage name of Jacques Offenbach. Tout Paris flocked to see and hear Offenbach, and Friday evenings at his home were legendary, with famous artists and musicians beating a path to his doorstep.
