Their initial line-up consisted of John Jay Traynor, Howard Kane née Kirschenbaum, Kenny Vance née Rosenberg and Sandy Deanne née Yaguda, though their greatest success on the charts came after Traynor had been replaced as lead singer by Jay Black. They were discovered while performing in student venues at New York University in the late 1950s. They auditioned for Leiber and Stoller, who gave the group its name. Despite the radical upheaval of the 1960s, Jay & The Americans not only survived, they thrived. They scored, with more than a little help from the Brill Building's cadre of heavyweight songwriters, an absurd number of hits. Nearly every one, as this triple-disc set proves, was built of identical material: crooner vocals lifted from a bygone era, saccharine strings and a faint whiff of doo-wop.
