If you know anything about Jilted John - whether you were a British pop kid in the late '70s, or a new wave fetishist - about all that you know is that he had one of the funniest one-off singles of the era, with the eponymous Jilted John, the story of a boy who was left by his girlfriend. for a guy called Gordon. It was a slice of sneering, self-deprecating genius, something that's shocking upon first listen, and remains funny on the 50th spin. Album 1978 16 Songs. True Love Stories Jilted John. I can only imagine what it must have been like to have lived in England in the 1970's and heard "Jilted John" on the airwaves for the first time. If that had happened to me, it would surely have been an epiphany to rival John Peel's first exposure to "Teenage Kicks." Sadly, that didn't happen, and I would have to wait until 2017 to finally stumble onto this seminal track courtesy of Soulseek. Truthfully, I purchased this lavish LP package on the strength of that single alone, not realizing that the entire album would be a work of genius. Let's begin with the reissued 7" of "Going Steady" with b-side "Jilted John." The disc sounds great, and my copy is pressed on green swirl vinyl. It's more the green of mildew or clovers than slime, but you get the idea. The single is housed in a sturdy cardboard sleeve that reproduces the original artwork. The album jacket is also a meticulous reproduction. Inside you will find a Mice and Ladders board game that I have no idea how to play, a folding insert that explains the Jilted John phenomenon in glorious detail, and a colored vinyl disc housed in a nice die-cut plain white inner sleeve. My copy of the LP is pressed on the same color green swirl vinyl as the single. As to the music, I would say this is a concept album about relationships, told from the perspective of a precocious, pimply British teenager. The playing is lively and the humor is infectious. Stylistically, this music is in a similar vein to Captain Sensible, and would seem to be an antecedent to such bands as Television Personalities and even The Monochrome Set. Thematically, it points the way to Belle and Sebastian. Everyone knows the singalong chorus "Gordon is a moron," but check out this couplet: "I got up at half past six and ate two Weetabix" (from "The Paperboy Song"). I can't recommend this album, and this particular edition, enough - a fine tribute to a landmark achievement in the musical expression of teenage angst.
I am jealous. Glad you got to see him again!
Grew up with this in the summer of ‘78 at in my early teenage years - what an album !, I lost my original copy but bought a nice copy recently with the card insert with mice and ladders. Saw him at the 100 club last year - what a gig & I still knew all of the words......
