Reviews of the John Lennon - Imagine (7):
Ishnjurus
John Lennon once made the comment that "Elvis died when he went into the army". I submit that Johnny died the day he married Yoko. I understand this song is cherished by so many Lennon and Beatle fans. Personally, I prefer the old jingle "I'd Like to Buy the World A Coke".One thing I cannot tolerate in lyrical content are endless platitudes. Think of Peter Cetera's "Glory of Love". A chimpanzee could have written it.As I have aged, I have no use for idealism. I find it but a synonym for naiveté. The Nick Lowe-written Elvis Costello song "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding?" is a much more clever song than "Imagine".Lennon's lyrics challenge the sovereignty of nations (as the whole world moves into Third World Nation status this is clearly a hippie's hashpipe dream) and ushered in a generation of 'hipper than thou' atheists. To hell with God, let's deify trees and plants and flowers and mosquitos.Oh how I miss the angry young man John with his "Sexy Sadies" and "You Can't Do Thats" and the inspired intelligence behind his great "Happiness is a Warm Gun", "I Am The Walrus" and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away". Lennon, at his peak, was cynical and knowing. "Revolution" is a very honest song: "But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you aint gonna make it with anyone anyhow."As the castrated husband of the silly Yoko Ono, Lennon was way past his artistic peak. He pretty much alludes to this in "Watching the Wheels". Leave it to Johnny to remain brutally honest. But "Imagine" is so empty and so false. "Imagine no possessions"? Give me a break. I'll let you LOOK at my Beatle albums, but I OWN them, get it? They are I ME MINE! Ha ha. And if you look at YOUR real world, you have possessions and you are damn proud of them. Lennon liked his Rolls Royces. Speak ill of Elvis all you want, at least he gave Cadillacs away to some people. This song is no harmless piece of fluff, as silly as the lyrics are. As sure as John Denver sold the Rocky Mountain High to thousands of people, so does Lennon here prop up and renew the silly hippie myth of life. I guess people need romance and are compelled (driven?) to sentimentalize old times. The sixties saw the apex of pop music, and I lived through them--I was even a hippy once. But I seem to recall an awful lot of assassinations, a war in which many were killed and those that weren't came back and were spat upon and called "babykillers" by the "intellectual" hippies. Not to mention race riots.I see by other reviews of this song that most of the 'critics' are hippies themselves. Of course they love this song. It's almost like wearing bellbottoms and smelling of patchouli. The song is a pinnacle of propaganda.Groovy, baby, groovy.I feel very fortunate I was there when the Beatles first appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show". Believe it or not, I am one of the biggest Beatlemaniacs I know. McCartney and Lennon opened up a world of music to me that has kept me relatively happy and sane/insane!I guess people like reruns. But to cling to the past, to learn nothing from history is truly demented. Last I looked, we're just repeating history except the president is black. Yippee! On another note, England has constructed a "John Winston Lennon" airport. There is a plaque emblazoned with the words: "Above us, only sky." How touching. I don't know about you, but when I'm getting on an airplane, I would like to be allowed to believe in a deity that might ensure a safe trip. It's a shame John Lennon is remembered so well for one of his worst songs. Kind of reminds me that Chuck Berry's only 'hit' was the unfunny "My Ding-A-Ling". This was his reward after years of constructing pop tunes filled with wonderful poetry. Just shows to go you what the masses want. If they all want it, hold it under suspicion. But keep playing "Imagine" and keep imagining and hoping and wishing. Turn me on, dead man.

That "I'll let you LOOK at my Beatle albums, but I OWN them, get it? They are I ME MINE! Ha ha."-line gave me chickenpox!

As Nietzshe once said: "Nothing has caused so much human misery than hope...." I concur with this dastardly man.Mind you, I'm not talking about faith. That is something else again. And I certainly have nothing against aspirations, but the obsessive, compulsive idea of making this misshapen and imperfect circle called "Earth" some sort of ideal world is fairly neurotic. You can hope you win the lottery. But you got to buy a ticket first. Then you can hope you win the lottery, but lthe odds are against you.Wishing and hoping is fanciful and cowardly. It is doing nothing.Personally, I think the human race is clinically depressed. With good reason, too. I suspect we all went a bit looney when The Smiley Face was born. When was that, the seventies? Personally, I have never quite recovered since the Beatles broke up. Yeah, yeah, yeah!

In 1971, when this song was released, i was just an eight year old french kid that had just moved to New York. I remember very well hearing that song on the radio. And i also remember seeing a huge black guy walking the alleys of Central Park, around the same time. This guy must have been 6 feet 4… before. Before going to Viet Nam. He was "walking" around Central Park with his wife and kid, a young boy about my age. But the guy had no more feet, no more legs, and had been cut almost ABOVE the waist line. And he was saying, to all the people his path crossed : "Gimme my money ! Gimme my money !", with a fierce look in his eyes. Being black, and a Viet Nam vet heavily injured must not have helped his daily life. You can believe me, when i listened to that song, i was just a kid, but i too thought the lyrics were quite naive (like, "who's overtly against peace ??"). Sweet intentions that do not match the harsh truth of reality. There is a sweet time for imagining and dreaming, and another time for living and acting. What's the purpose of a song that is just asking you to "imagine" world peace and fraternity ? I think, too, that this song's fame is highly usurped, as a protest or political song. It IS a nice song, but it's just a cute song, nothing more. As time passed, i forgot the lyrics (even if they are damn easy). But i will never forget the enraged eyes of that man. Forty years later, tears still come to my eyes when i think about him. THAT was a life lesson. IMHO, the song is disposable…

I can remember listening to 'Imagine' as a young kid and it moving me so much. That hasn't changed today. OK it has been played to death over the years sometimes but the words never lose their magnificent power. If only World Leaders like that imbecile Son Of a Bush could take heed and listen to the lyrics, then again he wouldn't understand them anyway, they would be far too deep and meaningful for that thick bast**d.
great ant
You sound like you didn't win the lottery, and you're blaming Bush. That damn anti-Christ nazi makes a helluva scapegoat, no?;>D

You are so right!!!!Thanx for commenting and greetz Erik
