John Philip Sousa ˈsuːsə November 6, 1854 March 6, 1932 was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for American military marches. He is known as The March King or the American March King, to distinguish him from his British counterpart Kenneth J. Alford who is also known as The March King. Among his best-known marches are The Stars and Stripes Forever National March of the United States of America, Semper Fidelis official march of the United. Though most have the same high quality of structure, color, and melodic invention of John Philip Sousa's best efforts, many of them have faded from the public's imagination along with their composer's operettas and symphonic music. However, a revival of Sousa's work has been in progress since the 1980s, and Keith Brion and the New Sousa Band have been instrumental in preserving Sousa's legacy through authentic re-creations in the period's boisterous performance style. The Original All-American Sousa CD - Delos 3102. Overview . Obscurities, such as The Free Lance, New York Hippodrome, and The Pride of Pittsburgh are revitalized through the band's enthusiastic readings. The Glory of the Yankee Navy, Sabre and Spurs, and Nobles of the Mystic Shrine sound robust and ready for the next parade. While there will never be another Sousa and his Band, this recording is an homage to both Sousa 1854-1932 and his renowned band 1892-1932. The spirit and letter of the original are framed in the perspective of modern musicians, modern instruments and modern recording techniques. Our efforts are infused, informed and inspired by Sousa's original band. The musical speech of the 1920s inflects the technique and style of the 90s.
