Reviews of the Satyricon - Satyricon (4):
The best album after their first 3 albums. Do not expect this album to be black metal style like the good old days. This album is different. It reflects maturity and, to me, this is a good landing for a once black metal god.Hail.
I realy can't hear those whining opinions/reviews anymore. I was a fan of the albums 1 to 3 and I'm still a fan of these tunes. In fact I stopped listening to them after Nemesis Divina. Within the years I checked a few songs of every new album but wasn't really impressed.I think its hell important for a band to grow up within the years. I'm happy they did! I'M not a 16 year old black metal kid anymore and I'm very happy with the result of the new album. Its the very first album that I bought since Nemesis Divina and I'm very happy with the purchase. The whole colored vinyl massacre is a mess, but after all, who cares when you get such fine songs!Dark Medieval Times & The Shadowthrone are milestones in the genre and Satyricon did enough for this (!) scene. Lets be fair and let them find their own style, whatever it may sound like.I like the new stuff a lot!
I see your point, I really do. Its just that those negative reviews are based on direct comparisons to their early work and that simply doesn't work anymore. I think if you try to limit the album to its music and not to its bandname, you may find some likeable parts in it aswell.
I guess it's just a case of you like it or you don't like it. Does my negative review make me a 'whining' metaller? I don't think so. Satyricon is just one of those Marmite albums. The band are now exploring post-black territories and I am no longer interested in them. I feel that the new album has no real direction, but that's my opinion. I'm not that young kid who was into Venom in the early 80's, but I still like my black metal black, as opposed to progressive, but that's just me.
