His date of birth is a matter of some debate. Son House himself alleged that he was middle aged during World War I, and, more specifically, that he was 79 in 1965, which would mean that he was born around 1886. Eddie James Son House, Jr. March 21, 1902 October 19, 1988 was an American delta blues singer and guitarist, noted for his highly emotional style of singing and slide guitar playing. After years of hostility to secular music, as a preacher and for a few years also working as a church pastor, he turned to blues performance at the age of 25. He quickly developed a unique style by applying the rhythmic drive, vocal power and emotional intensity of his preaching to the newly learned idiom

Reviews of the Son House - The Legendary 1941-1942 Recordings In Chronological Sequence (1):

The noise on these recordings is natural as they were recorded from the 78 rpm era. I can see where some people may not realize that this was the only recordings by these artists and to reproduce them and take out the hissing from the 78's would be problematic
