Music from Big Pink is the debut studio album by the Band. Released in 1968, it employs a distinctive blend of country, rock, folk, classical, R&B, and soul. The album itself was recorded in studios in New York and Los Angeles in 1968, and followed the band's backing of Bob Dylan on his 1966 tour as the Hawks and time spent together in upstate New York recording. As it was, Music from Big Pink came as a surprise. At first blush, the group seemed to affect the sound of a loose jam session, alternating emphasis on different instruments, while the lead and harmony vocals passed back and forth as if the singers were making up their blend on the spot. Music from Big Pink is the 1968 debut album by rock band The Band. It features their best-known song, The Weight. With a distinctive blend of country, rock, folk, classical, R&B, and soul, Music From Big Pink is generally considered one of the best albums by the Band, along with their 1969 second album The Band. In 2003, the album was ranked number 34 on Rolling Stone magazine. Music From Big Pink wasnt actually recorded at the now-mythic Saugerties house it was named after, but the camaraderie and intimacy of the Basement Tapes era are all over the album. The Band 1969 If Big Pink was a collection of great songs, its follow-up felt more like a single sprawling tale told in chapters. Four fifths of the Band then known as the Hawks appear on Dylans classic 1966 Royal Albert Hall live album - Helm had split when the booing got out of hand - but Before the Flood, recorded at the end of a triumphant 1974 tour, marks the only official live Dylan release to feature the entire group. Weighing Big Pink Redux necessitates some recapitulation of the albums unusual origins. Even if you knew back in 68 that the Band then known as the Hawks had backed Bob Dylan on his first electric tour of 1965-66 - in fact, even if youd seen the group in action - the genesis of the sound of Music From Big Pink would have been elusive. The music made by the group now simply known as the Band bore little resemblance to the loud, abrasive hard rock the Hawks had played. Album: Music from Big Pink 1967,1970 Dwarf Music.
