Shut Down Volume 2 is the fifth album by the American rock band the Beach Boys, released March 2, 1964 on Capitol Records. Produced by Brian Wilson, it it is the follow-up to the band's Little Deuce Coupe, released the previous October, and to Shut Down, a Capitol compilation album. Shut Down Volume 2 was the first of three studio albums that the band released in 1964, and the first recorded without guitarist David Marks, who departed from the band following disagreements with manager Murry Wilson. The Beach Boys are an iconic American rock band, frequently cited as one of the most influential and commercially successful groups in the history of popular music due to their intricate vocal harmonies, studio experiments, and novel approaches to pop songwriting. Rooted in doo-wop and rock and roll, their early string of vocal surf hits defined the '60s California Sound. For a period afterward, they notably delved into progressive pop styles. often combining elements from classical and jazz in innovative ways. Many Beach Boys purists may look at 1964's Shut Down Volume 2 as another one of their average early releases, the way I listen to this album it sounds like a very good transitional effort. Fun, Fun, Fun and Don't Worry. Why Do Fools Fall in Love is one of their best oldies covers, Shut Down, Part II is one of their better early instrumentals not to mention Carl's Big Chance from All Summer Long, the Louie Louie cover has been described by many as soulless while I can't find a thing wrong with it and Carl Wilson's guitar. Shut Down Volume 2 is the fifth studio album by the Beach Boys, and the first of four they would release in 1964. The album's Volume 2 refers to the 1963 hot rod compilation Shut Down, released by the band's label, Capitol Records, which included 409 and Shut Down but was not a Beach Boys album. This is the first album not to feature David Marks, and he would not appear on another album until That's Why God Made the Radio in 2012. When Shut Down Volume 2 came out, the title applied this time to the Beach Boys and no one else. Fun, Fun, Fun was en route to a No. 5 peak on the Hot 100, their second-highest showing to date after the No. 3 success of Surfin USA. The groups next single, the brilliant I Get Around, wasnt on the LP, but its b-side, the gorgeous Dont Worry Baby, was, and again made the top 30 on its own strength. Also of note, regarding Shut Down Vol. 2, is that Brian Wilson was unhappy with the title of the album, because the band had obviously evolved past the title tune. Dave Marks most likely played on some of the album, and Pom-Pom Playgirl is Carls first lead vocal. Another erratic early album from the Beach Boys few other rock LPs have such a wide gap between the best and worst material. On the good side, you have absolute classics in the Chuck Berry-ish Fun, Fun, Fun and the superb Don't Worry Baby, one of the most advanced pop productions of 1964 with its breathtaking harmonies and unusual lyric. The Beach Boys. Released March 2, 1964. Shut Down Volume 2 Tracklist. Fun, Fun, Fun Lyrics. Don't Worry Baby Lyrics. Recorded between the first two months of 1964, Shut Down Volume 2 finds Brian Wilson exploring a grander, more Spector-influenced production sound, most notably on songs like Fun, Fun, Fun, Dont Worry Baby and their cover of Why Do Fools Fall in Love.
