Album

Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future is the second studio album by American indie pop duo The Bird and the Bee, released on January 27, 2009 by Blue Note Records. The album contains the two lead-off tracks from the duo's last two studio EPs: Polite Dance Song from Please Clap Your Hands and Birthday from One Too Many Hearts. All tracks are written by Greg Kurstin and Inara George, except where noted. The Bird and the Bee. Those in the market for fast songs will find a few here, most notably Love Letter to Japan and Meteor, but the album's true gems are its slightly slower numbers: the elegiac My Love, Birthday, Polite Dance Song, and the stringed splendor of Baby. On album number two Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future, George's winning coo remains charmingly aloof, while Kurstin's exotic space-age jazz production has stayed decidedly eccentric. In other words, it's basically more of the same. The difference, of course, is the loss of the element of surprise. Rather than spend some of that accumulated capital and go farther afield, as with most sequels the pair has instead played it safe, if always pleasantly so. Yet while the results are sonically impeccable, they're also only intermittently compelling. More By The Bird and the Bee. Interpreting the Masters, Vol. 1 A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates. While it's not exactly fair to say the Bird and the Bee were born with the keys to the city in hand, it's probably safe to suggest the Los Angeles duo initially had enough connections and friends in the industry to make things at least a little bit easier. Singer Inara George is the daughter of late Little Feat singer Lowell George, while Greg Kurstin is one of those L. If that combined background didn't earn the duo complete carte blanche, it no doubt got the group a leg up on other virtually out-of-nowhere. The Bird and The Bee are an indie popelectronica duo from Los Angeles, California consisting of Inara George the Bird on vocals and Greg Kurstin the Bee who does the majority of the producing, engineering and mixing as well as providing all instrumentation apart from Inara's fuzz bass contributions. Reviews of the The Bird And The Bee - Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future (1):

They plough a furrow all their own, and more power to them for doing so in an era of a thousand soundalikes. This album continues where the eponymous The Bird and The Bee left off - though I preferred that first release. Still well worth a listen.
