The Hazards of Love is the fifth album by the American indie rock band The Decemberists, released through Capitol Records and Rough Trade in 2009. The album was inspired by an Anne Briggs EP titled The Hazards of Love. According to the band, frontman Colin Meloy had set out to write a song with the album's title, which eventually developed into an entire album. Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond, Shara Nova of My Brightest Diamond, and Jim James of My Morning Jacket provide guest vocals throughout. The Hazards of Love is a rock opera, with all songs contributing to a unified narrative, similar to the use of recurring stories on the bands previous album, The Crane Wife. The plot is a love story: a woman named Margaret voiced by Becky Stark falls in love with a shape-shifting boreal forest dweller named William voiced by Colin Meloy. Williams mother, the jealous Forest Queen voiced by Shara Nova, and the villainous Rake also voiced by Meloy bring conflict to the albums story arc. The plot is an elaboration of Child Ballad 216, Roud 91: The Mothers Malison or Clydes Water. from Playlist : The Decemberists - Hazards of Love full CD album http. Album 2009 17 Songs. The Hazards of Love centers around a love story, similar to the use of recurring stories in The Crane Wife: a woman named Margaret voiced by Stark falls in love with a shape-shifting forest dweller voiced by Meloy. According to the band, frontman Colin Meloy set out to write a song with the album's title-eventually leading to an album in itself. King Decemberist Colin Meloy's love for the heydays of British folk-rock has always served as the foundation on which he builds his crafty, idiosyncratic chamber pop, but on Hazards of Love he's taken that bedrock and built his own version of Stonehenge. Pedal steel cries alongside swaying accordion on Isn't it a Lovely Night, with a precious post-orgasm post-Pete & the Pirates pun. The Decemberists already released three non-album singles last year, compiled as the Always the Bridesmaid EP Sleepless, a lovely orchestral lullaby from the recent Dark Was the Night charity compilation, suggests the Decemberists still have plenty more nautical epics to perform. I've got nothing to hold onto, Meloy sings. The Decemberists are devoted anachronists. So with the pop album completing its evolution into iPod shuffle - mix fodder, its the right time for the Portland, Oregon, band to release an old - fashioned prog concept record. True to form, The Hazards of Love brings the glorious excess: Theres strummy British folk rock and heavy - metal thunder, orchestral strings and a childrens choir. Guitarist Chris Funk, like Yes Steve Howe, deploys every stringed instrument in the showroom, from mandolin and autoharp to pedal steel
