Album

Instrumentals is the debut album by The Nels Cline Singers led by American guitarist Nels Cline which was released in March 2002 on the Cryptogramophone label. All About Jazz stated Jazz fans without an ear open to rock rhythms, energy music, or punk sensibility will almost certainly fail to appreciate what the Nels Cline Singers have done on Instrumentals. Initiate is the fourth album by The Nels Cline Singers led by American guitarist Nels Cline which was released in April 2010 on the Cryptogramophone label. The Guardian's John Fordham rated the album 4 stars out of 5, saying, Don't be deceived. This trio, ironically called the Nels Cline Singers , features only the voices of guitars, basses, and various forms of acoustic and electric percussion. Accompanied by drummer and loopsprocessing whiz Scott Amendola and bassist Devin Hoff , Cline turns in one of his most genuinely mystifying performances to date. Using an entire host of guitars, including 12-string and baritone guitars in addition to his army of electrics, Cline looks to the jazz muse for inspiration and finds it. On Instrumentals, Cline himself often favours a thick, somewhat overdriven sound, tending toward dirty or even positively filthy as on Lowered Boom, a truly hardcore electric blues. The opening track, A Mug like Mine, teases a simple melody line almost to the point of obsession, in much the same way that John Coltrane played with all the possibilities of a simple riff or phrase in his later work. On Cline's remake of Coltrane's Interstellar Space with drummer Gregg Bendian, he proved himself to be a superb Coltrane interpreter. From the opening notes of Instrumentals, it rapidly becomes clear that the entirely vocal-free Nels Cline Singers are out to make some noise. Guitarist Nels Cline, who has eagerly straddled the divide between jazz and rock, maintains an open ear for dissonance-and this is a big reason he's received such broad recognition. A Mug Like Mine takes a nine-minute voyage into the higher-order melodies, harmonies and rhythms of energy music, an opening salvo announcing things to come. But like always, Cline remains unpredictable. As the record moves on, he occupies territory as dive.
