Feline is the seventh studio album by The Stranglers and was released in January 1983 on the Epic record label in the United Kingdom. Feline drew heavily on two of the dominant musical influences in Europe of the time, by using primarily acoustic guitars and electronic drums as well as Dave Greenfield's synthesizers. Reviews of the The Stranglers - Feline (1):
Probably the most daring Stranglers album. They dared to defy all the expectations of everyone at a time when people were shouting louder to be heard. They dared also to weed out all the fans who liked them only for their more aggressive tunes.A Sunday afternoon listen with The Stranglers. ????????????
I'm guessing that you must've forgotten about The Gospel according to the men in black?! By comparison, and taking into account the success they'd achieved with Golden Brown and Strange Little Girl, Feline doesn't seem such a huge gamble. Yes, they were always likely to lose a certain type of Stranglers fan but that was also the case with the release of Black and White, which was a big change from what had gone before. As for The Gospel..... I don't think anyone outside of the band could've really foreseen that one coming! As someone who much admires their gentler and more melodic side, I can say that I've come to like Feline a lot, even if it falls quite some way short, of being up there with their very best work. What I feels lets it down most, is the use of synth (Linn?) drums on what seems like almost every track. Regardless, I think that the songs are strong enough to merit at least a 3.5/5 rating.
